    After closing down of many regionwise stock exchanges, NSE and BSE were the ones to remain.  NSE is more popular because NIFTY lists top 50 companies, It was the first one to introduce online trading and creation of depository  where stock is held in electronic form.

    National Stock exchange (NSE) had started derivatives market in the year 2001 and Bombay stock exchange (BSE) in the year 2008. About 80% of trading happens in derivative market and hence NSE became more popular than BSE.
